Cell Telephony is On the Rise and So Is the Fix One

Romanians talked for 47.8 million hours during the first half of 2004, using cell phone companies, said Ion Smeianu, president of the National Authority for Regulation of Communications.

At the end of June there were 8.35 million cell phone users, and 4.53 fix phone lines. "Though fix telephony did not develop in a similar spectacular way as the mobile telephony did, it is worth noting that the trend is up, while internationally there is a stagnation," said Smeianu.

As for the traffic, in the first six months this year Romanians talked over cell phones much more than last year: actually 83% of last year’s conversations.
Also, in 2003, there were 438 million SMS; but by the end of June 2004 almost as many were sent: 413 million SMSs, which is 94% of last year. The multimedia messages tripled from last year, growing from 200,000 in 2003 to 676,000 in 2004. In 47.1% of households at least one of the family members uses cell phones.
