Basescu Wants to Be a Player President

POLITICS - October 7th 2004
Yesterday, Traian Basescu received the total agreement of the liberals and democrats for his candidacy for Cotroceni. In his first "presidentiable" speech, Basescu announced he wants to change the statute of the chief of the state, from a spectator to a player.

Adrian, you don’t know how small you begin to be! With the threat addressed to his traditional enemy, Traian Basescu opened his potential President career in his own specific way. In front of him there were some hundreds of DP (the Democratic Party) members in the National Council, which acclaimed him, chanting like on the stadium, after they had unanimously voted him as candidate for Presidency. The democrat describes himself as a partner of the Romanians, their colleague, who works for them. "The Romanians have been used to an old-daddy President type. I don’t have that age or behavior", he was saying before the liberals, who had previously unanimously voted for him, got to the hall at the Parliament’s house. Vasile Blaga , the campaign chief, splits the hall according to the political preferences: left for the democrats, right for the liberals. It gets full. The national anthem is being sung. In Basescu’s opening, ally Tariceanu recommends him as "the candidate who can successfully continue the work of Stolojan". "We are here for you, Traian, for better or for worse". "To arms! We are at war", he pathetically ends.

ASYLUM. On the other side, Traian Basescu had prepared a speech to show he is a potential President. He talked about the ways in which he will throw other the board the ones who turned justice "into a rag to erase the misery they leave behind in their run for money and power", but also about the way in which Romania must not enter Europe on her knees and about the fact it has to be a strong partner in NATO, not just a security consumer. He also said things about a Parliament that mustn’t be an asylum for lazybones and lawbreakers.

PLANS. After that, Basescu drew the clothes he would like to wear as President. The ones of a player chief of the state, not the ones of a spectator. "I’ve never been an uninvolved person. I want the people to say Basescu manages the country from the Cotroceni keep, not that he just is at the Cotroceni Palace", Basescu bragged about. "Together with the Parliament I’ll keep the Government working", Basescu bragged about. "It isn’t enough for the President to give sentences about the fact that the society is destroyed by the corruption and nothing happens! To feel compassion for the people’s poverty and nothing happens! To complain about the officials’ arrogance and nothing happens!", Basescu started his candidate attacks, and he ended as he started: "I heard on TV that the hens vote for Adrian Nastase. I want the Romanians to vote for me".

STOLOJAN "TEMPORARILY" RETIRED

The authorized NLP (the National Liberal Party) president, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, admitted yesterday that supporting Traian Basescu is more compulsory than willingly accepted by the liberals. "Supporting Traian Basescu is not based on feelings, but on pragmatism", said Tariceanu in front of the National Representatives’ Delegation (NRD) of NLP, explaining that Basescu is "the best chance of winning the elections and of forming a government with a liberal Prime Minister". The liberal leader also said that NLP "is, finally a powerful party and can impose its liberal values for governing". Actually, Tariceanu insisted on the idea that the liberals must have a powerful voice in the executive and must impose its principles in the governing strategy. He also said that Stolojan retreated from the Presidential race, but not from NLP as well, and that we are dealing with "a temporary retreat from the active political life". The NRD of NLP unanimously approved Traian Basescu’s candidacy for the Presidency, and the ones who didn’t agree with him by now, Dinu Patriciu and Viorel Catarama, also voted for him.
