POLITICS - January 14th 2005
Yesterday, Dan Voiculescu, the HPR (Humanist Party in Romania) leader, re-stated that he had not had any connections to the former Security and to Ceausescu supposed banking accounts. He made public a letter to the press, a letter regarding this matter.

FINAL DISCUSSION. Dan Voiculescu said that this is the last time when he talks with the journalists about the unfunded accusations against him and that, from no on, these issues will be exclusively taken care of by the party’s lawyers.
The humanist leader made public a letter to the press, and we present it integrally.

"This is the end of it! The Romanians have a saying: nobody attacks the weak. Well, it is true! I have observed it myself. In Romania, having your own successful business, being your own master, managing to be a successful politician, means envy from the others.

Years in a row, my family and I, had to bear the endless effect of the unfunded accusations desperately trying to asperse me, to destroy all the accomplishments made with hard work during my entire life.

Representing myself, my family, and as a proof of respect for my team, I have decided that the time has come for me to take actions and make these attacks stop.

This is the reason for being here, in front of the public opinion, today and clearly stating:

This is the end of it!

One: I have never been a member of the former Security, not even an assistant. I have not practiced any work connected to the political police!

Two: I do not have the slightest connection to Ceausescu’s bank accounts.

Let us take each of them separately now:

One. I promised that I would show as soon as possible the files proving that I have never been involved in the activities of the former Security. Unfortunately, the time for getting these files did not depend on me, but on the answer of certain competent state institution. I have presented them today, January 13, 2005.

Two. For once more, I am stating that I do not have the slightest connections to Ceausescu’s bank accounts. I am aware of the fact that this is a matter that draws attention, but I do not understand the reason for me having to periodically bear the aspersions of certain people that allusively associate me with this matter.

I remind you all that I won all the lawsuits against different libelers, in the country or abroad. Recently, Voiculescu has become the source of all the bad things of the Romanian society. I was astounded to see the article in the famous Financial Times daily newspaper that virulently attacks my public image. This is very awkward since I have answered with a total transparency to all the questions of this magazine’s representative. As a Senator and former honest and internationally respected businessperson, I have decided to sue the authors of this attack, the Financial Times magazines respectively, due to the gravity of the things written in the article, and to the multiple meanings of this denigration against myself as well. For this purpose, I publicly announce that I have hired one of the most reputed law-houses in Great Britain and I am to ask for the adequate moral compensations.

This is the end of it! All the possible future anti-Voiculescu campaigns will go to Court!"

FILES

During these past months, Dan Voiculescu re-submitted his request to the NCSSA (National Council for the Study of the State’s Archives) in which he stated that he wanted to find out whether there are files regarding him that appeared after 1982. The CNSSA answer is that, after supplementary research, the RIS (Romanian Information Service) has no information confirming the existence of other files than the ones already present at NCSSA. Voiculescu made a similar request to the RIS. The answer was that the RIS cannot allow access to these files, but that "the NCSSA already received the files the laws refer to". The file received from the NCSSA reads: "Dan Voiculescu hasn’t been agent/ assistant of the Security in matters regarding the political police". The humanists also received an answer from the NBR (National Bank of Romania) regarding a file that appeared in several press articles, according to which, Mugur Isarescu, as President of the governmental Commission for the identifying and the return of the funds misappropriated from state’s patrimony, seems to have asked for the checking of the Crescent company. The NBR file reads: "there haven’t been any proofs to be taken into account by the Romanian Government in order to make a legal complaint against Dan Voiculescu or other employees of the Crescent company".

LAWSUITS

Yesterday, Dan Voiculescu stated that he won the aspersion lawsuit against the Evenimentul Zilei daily newspaper, a lawsuit regarding these exact two issues. "Few days a go, I have received a definite and irrevocable decision from the Supreme Court of Justice saying that Evenimentul Zilei has been fined with 200 million lei. Next week we’ll probably block the banking accounts of this newspaper in order to get our money back", said the humanist leader. He also said that he is to begin a lawsuit against Financial Times due to the same reasons, and that the lawyer taking care of that is a great master, member of the London Bar. "We’ll probably ask for a moral damage of more than 1 million dollars from Financial Times", Voiculescu said.

CONTROL

The humanists support the proposition of state’s Minister Adriean Videanu regarding the enforcement of the estate statement for all the citizens of the country. "One year ago, HPR has submitted to the Parliament an initiative according to which the estate statement should be made by all the citizens of the country. This was done because we observed that, usually, the estates go from the children to the family, to the grandmother, to the grandfather. The control should be made to all the ones showing a rich status, but who are not able to justify it by their incomes. It is very hard to believe that a clerk, and even a minister, with the minister salary being the only income, might own luxurious mansions", said Voiculescu.

GOVERNMENT

The humanist leader re-stated that the HPR members of the Parliament would not withdraw their votes for the presidents of the two Chambers of the Parliament. "We will be the supporters of the two presidents as long as they are compatible with the positions they have", Voiculescu said. He stated that the party he leads "has no boss, no political obligations to anyone, nor to the NLP (National Liberal Party), nor to the DP (Democratic Party), nor to President Traian Basescu". "If there is anyone thinking that they could blackmail us with the governing, that person is making an error", Voiculescu stated. "We are members of the Government in order to insure the political stability. If possible we will remain members, if not, we will leave. We owe nothing to anyone, we are an independent party and we act according to the interests of the electorate that we represent", Voiculescu concluded.
