Romania Car Market Down 49%

16 Iun 2010   •   00:00

The Romanian car market in January-May this year recorded its steepest decline in the European Union, according to the Association of European Car Makers (ACEA). In absolute numbers, there were 26,351 new units licensed for traffic, or 49% lower than the same period a year before.

However, the Romanian car maker Dacia recorded an increase of 21.3% in sales on the EU market, or 108,505 units sold over the same period.

"The demand for new cars in the EU dropped for the second month in a row during May, which is consistent with the difficult economic situation and the cut of government support of the car market," the ACEA report shows.

Germany had the biggest car market in the EU, and the steepest rise in new cars registration was recorded in Portugal, at 56.3%.
The Renault Group, owner of Dacia, recorded in the first five months of 2010 a 24.9% hike of new car registrations, or 623,881 units. The German group Volkswagen was the car maker with the biggest ratio of the EU market, with Peugeot Citroen, Renault and Ford coming next.
