Architects Ponder Over Crowded And Dysfunctional Capital City

de Daniela Ivan    |    06 Iun 2009   •   00:00

Architects and environment NGO members met on Thursday to ponder over the pitiful state Bucharest had arrived at over the past 20 years of post-communist chaotic development, in meeting organized by Forum Invest.

Lack of political vision was to blame even for the city's lack of cleanliness, the speakers said.

As it is, Bucharest is a dusted over, ugly, dirty, lack-of-vision, lack-of-future kind of city, they agreed.

Things can not go on being as they are, for the estimates are the population will double over the next ten years, to reach five million people.

People have to live somewhere in the city, and the dilemma architects are faced with is whether to develop the city vertically or horizontally.
Ironically, there is a lot of unused space in Bucharest, if one compares its population density to other European capitals: Bucharest stays at 92 people per hectare, while the vast majority of capital cities stay at around 400 people per hectare.
