Basescu asks Belgrade to communicate with Pristina

Invitation to Bucharest

Yesterday, the Serbian President, Boris Tadici, made a quick visit to Bucharest and was advised by his Romanian counterpart to “get over the difficult moment faster” and not to give up on the EU adherence, because “Serbia’s self-isolation would be disadvantageous”. Moreover, even though Romania doesn’t agree with the new state, Traian Basescu told Tadici he “should talk to Pristina”.

A tall and dignified Boris Tadici. A commiserating Traian Basescu who behaved like all the others present in the room in which he diplomatically said how sorry he was for his loss. Here is how things look like for Boris Tadici: “Serbia still wants to have the entire territory, to keep its province, Serbia will never give up on its future as an EU state”, in spite of all the states that “hit” it by agreeing with the Kosovo independence. “Serbia will never agree with the independence of the Kosovo Province, but all the actions and moves of Serbia will be made to maintain the territorial integrity of the state. These are the reasons for which we will never start a war and we have quite an experience when it comes to the wars in the Balkans.” However, the Serbian President says “the communication with the countries that agreed with the illegal independence of Kosovo will be reduced”. “This certainly doesn’t mean the self-isolation of Serbia, because this would mean Serbia supported the gesture of the ones that agreed with the independence of Kosovo”, Tadici explained.

The President of the neighbor state said he “acknowledged Romania’s attitude”, because “it doesn’t agree with the new illegally created state Kosovo, especially when Romania, as an EU member, maintains this position, which proves that there isn’t a common attitude in the EU when it comes to the illegal state Kosovo”. Tadici called Traian Basescu his friend, “the traditional friend of Serbia, the one who believes in the integrity of Serbia, who abides by the international rules and who believes in the European future of Serbia as much as I do”.

A veiled promise for the new state as well: Serbia will “increase its economical capacities”, which is “very interesting for Kosovo”.

The Eu message

Traian Basescu’s message for Boris Tadici was the one that appeared yesterday in all the press agencies in Berlin, Ljubljana or Sofia: Beograd has to continue the process for integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures. “As a friend of the Serbians, I would like to ask the Serbian politicians to talk to the European states, to continue the relations with the EU member states. Any strategy that would lead to a relative isolation of Serbia is disadvantageous for Serbia”, Traian Basescu said. As President of a state member of the EU, he said “the Union is interested in continuing the integration process”.

The Romanian President, who stated the Kosovo independence was “illegal”, continued by advising Tadici to try to communicate with the state he didn’t agree with. “I would like to say one more thing even though it might not be something everyone will agree with, but this is part of the politicians’ job. Beograd has to talk to Pristina. It has to find means to communicate at least to protect the Serbians in the province.”

One doesn’t always have the option of acting by his own will, but there is nothing in the way of the politicians when it comes to things they have to do. He wished the neighbor state to “get over this difficult moment as soon as possible and to make all the efforts to reach a nationally important goal: the integration in the European Union”.

KFor Yes, Eulex, No

Boris Tadici says he will defend his citizens in Kosovo with the help of KFOR and UNMIK and Beograd will not agree with the authority of the EU forces in Kosovo, because this mission (Eulex) was decided outside the United Nations.

Pain

“I wish to be very clear today in Bucharest, in Romania. Serbia has suffered a severe hit. My people are going through very hard times these days, because there are countries that are ready to agree with the independence of the Kosovo province. I share these feelings with the citizens of the Serbian Republic, but we will never give up, we will never surrender. We will never give up, we will never surrender.”

Boris Tadici
