Bucharest is an Eastern Europe city which had a spectacular evolution after year 2000, a recent report of the UN Agency for Habitat found.

The report says the Bucharest population grew by two million in 2004; cities like Sankt Petersburg and Moscow had a higher influx of new dwellers, but are confronted with higher unemployment.
Criminality came down too. After 2000 armed robberies registered the most dramatic drop in the region, when compared to cities in Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia. Thefts from cars and houses staid the same.
