About half a million Romanians have three credits on their name, on average two bank credits and one credit with a financial institution not subjected to the Central Bank supervision. The aggregate size of these credits amounts to 13.8 billion lei [roughly 3.3 billion Euro].
Surprisingly, the highest number of defaulted credits are, on average, under 5,000 lei [roughly 1,200 Euro]. This prompted the Central Bank to conclude that commercial banks are wrong when charging these clients more.
The number of people who defaulted on their credits was 80% higher in June 2010, from December 2008. The quota of defaulted credits went to 6.9% in June 2010, from 2.4% in December 2008.
About 4.5 million Romanians hold bank credits, which is far more than the number of people employed.
