DP Counterattack? When?

These are the facts. The Ministry of Education and Research (MER) stepped in front during the last period by showing its obsession of proving the nation that the national tests, as well as the Bacalaureat exam, cannot be cheated.

These are the facts. The Ministry of Education and Research (MER) stepped in front during the last period by showing its obsession of proving the nation that the national tests, as well as the Bacalaureat exam, cannot be cheated.

For this, before such events, the Ministry has announced extraordinary security measures. If one doesn’t know the real meaning of these, one could say Romania is not facing some banal exams, which should prove the high grade of illiteracy of the golden generation to be, but a complex operation regarding a planetary conflagration, pretty similar to the Apocalypse.

The Ministry has announced almost absurd measures in order to ensure the security of the national tests’ subjects.

Everyone was surprised when, on Saturday, 48 hours before the tests, a journalist from Adevarul managed to take the envelopes with the subjects for the History exam by saying he was a member of the Dambovita County delegation.

The impact was huge. This is also because, we repeat, the Ministry gave the impression of space defended as if it would be the place in which nuclear weapons were produced.

The President of the Commission for the National Tests is the State Secretary of the MER, Paloma Petrescu.

Even though the subordinates are the ones guilty, as it is normal in a modern, European administration, Paloma Petrescu, as well as Minister himself, Mihail Hardau are responsible for the incident. Paloma Petrescu is guilty because she had to take all the measures for such a thing not to happen. Mihail Hardau is guilty because it happened in the system he leads.

From this point of view, the decision of Calin Popescu Tariceanu of dismissing Paloma Petrescu seems more than justified.

This is not the first time such things happen. It happened at the Ministry of National Defense, at the Ministry of Health, at the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the Agency for Governmental Strategies. In these cases, Calin Popescu Tariceanu did not show the same intransigence as in the case of Paloma Petrescu. He didn’t take any instant decisions. He reacted only after the interventions of the media and when he did it, he blamed it on the absence of any preliminary investigation. It resulted in a scandal without any punishments.

Why did he do it now?

Paloma Petrescu is not a random Secretary of State. She is a DP member in the context of the cursed algorithm that defines the Romanian coalition Governments. Moreover, according to some press articles, she seems to be a close friend of the Basescus.

Calin Popescu Tariceanu knew all this. He knew that Paloma Petrescu would be only a dignitary that will not take into consideration the decision. He also knew that Minister Mihail Hardau and the DP leaders, instead of being the first ones to ask for the resignation of the Secretary of State, would not agree. This is why he jumped not only into announcing, but also to take the administrative decision regarding the resignation of Paloma Petrescu.

The Paloma Petrescu case seemed destined.

By hurrying to make the first move, Calin Popescu Tariceanu bet on an important electoral profit.
  • 1) He proved to the autochthonous public opinion that he takes prompt and drastic decisions as a response to the administration’s weaknesses.
  • 2) He put the Democratic Party into chess, by suggesting it is a party that coddles its political clientele.

The Democratic Party got the trick. However, it was too late.

Calin Popescu Tariceanu scored a strike.

Should we expect the DP counterattack?
