Today, the Austrian President, Heinz Fischer, arrives in Romania for a two-day visit. The main issue will obviously be Romaniaâs integration in the EU.
The visit of the Austrian President, the country of which holds the Presidency of the European Union Council at present, is extremely important for Romania, which is waiting for the confirmation of its adherence to the EU on January 1st 2007. Therefore, Presidents Basescu and Fischer will discuss upon the results obtained by the authorities in Bucharest for reaching this target. Romania is interested in knowing the current stage of the Austrian ratification process regarding the Romanian Treaty for the Adherence to the European mechanisms. The current stage of the implementation of the Austrian actions will be generally discussed upon during this meeting, as well as certain aspects regarding the European business environment. BILATERAL. The bilateral cooperation as well as the regional and European context will also be brought into discussion during the meeting between the two Presidents, says a public statement of the Romanian Presidency. The discussions about the economical cooperation, the ones about the energy system especially, will be of great interest for us. Basescu and Fischer will also discuss upon the perspectives of the Danube Cooperation Process, a multilateral collaboration initiative started in 2002 by Austria and Romania with the support of the European Commission and of the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe. The agenda will also contain the European aspirations of the states in the Western Balkans, the security and democracy climate in the Black Sea region and the peace process in the Middle East. Fischer will also meet the leaders of the two Chambers of the Parliament, PM Tariceanu, and will take party in the initiation of the Romanian-Austrian Business Forum.Translated by SORIN BALAN
