Former political allies, the National Liberal Party and the Democrat Liberal Party, vie now over the change in Constitution that will turn Romania into either a parliamentary republic proper, or a presidential republic.
PM and PNL president Calin Popescu Tariceanu said he was ready to address the topic after the parliamentary elections in November, showing his preference for the parliamentary republic, Tariceanu called it the “authentic European model.”
The PDL camp is staunchly behind former party leader, current president Traian Basescu, opting for the presidential republic proper, which they hope to bring about. Their argument is the direct voting of the president calls for enhanced powers for the latter. The PDL party leader Emil Boc suggested a referendum on the topic to take place next year, along the elections for the European Parliament.
