Romanian Made Furniture Drops Our Of Favor

Demand for domestic made furniture is forecast to be 30% lower this year when compared to last year, to reach an estimated 820 milion Euro in sales, an InterBiz study found. The reasons lie in the downspiral of production per-se and of the real-estate market, on the backdrop of tougher borrowing schemes prompted by the current world financial crisis.

The bulk of the transactions on the furniture market will come from selling furnitre for offices, for the hospitality industry, for commercial activities and for relocating manufacturing units.

At the same time, however, there is an increased demand for imported furniture. The market was 150 million Euro in 2004, and grew three times by 2008, to 470 million Euro for furniture imported from Italy, Germany, Poland or the Asian markets.

The furniture made in Romania makes now only 47% of the retail market.

"The medium and long term forecast is for the demand of imported furniture to constantly grow," the study found, stating that middle class Romanians prefer cheaper furniture, made of laminated wood panels, instead of actual wood.
