Romanian President Traian Basescu is now about to ripe the crops he had sawn. His main preoccupation in the fist two years in office was to fight his own political allies in the ruling coalition, namely the National Liberal Party, or PNL, and the Conservative Party, or PC.
The outcome of his actions is about to catch up with him, as Basescu is more likely to be suspended by Parliament, in procedures opened by the Social Democrat Party, or PSD, in opposition, just as his favored minister in the Executive, justice minister Monica Macovei, received a no-confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday. Basescuâs actions while holding the top position were as devastating as his actions were, while he was a member of the ruling coalition of 1997-2000.Then he triggered events which led to the dissolution of the Peasantsâ Party, one of the two historical parties in Romania. Now Basescuâs actions target the PNL, the second such historical party in the country. From December 2004 to December 2006, the ruling coalition did not go under 45% approval rates in opinion polls. Having early elections any time between those dates would have firmly changed the parliamentary majority to favor the PNL and the Democrat Party, or PD, the two main partners in the four-party coalition. But that opportunity was lost. Now both parties, the alliance as a whole, and Basescu himself are falling in opinion polls.
It may seem for Basescu, as he is spoon fed with reports from servile intelligence services and cronies only, that the public will discriminate between him and the parties. But he will be ill-advised to think so.
Macoveiâs rejection in parliament had little - if anything - to do with her performance on the job and much - if not everything - to do with Basescuâs damaging actions and statements.

He is his worst enemy. Basescu is always ready for a fight and to start one, if one is not readily available. But this is not the type of leader Romania needs once it joined both NATO and EU.
What the country needs is political stability and infrastructure development.
Romaniaâs GDP pushed over 100 billion euros, the budgetary revenues hiked too, and yet the plight of the pensioners or of the health and education systems are the same as before. Basescu placed himself in the position to be suspended by parliament, with his professional faults outnumbering his personal qualities. On his political tomb may be written that he died a happy man for having succeeded to wipe out all his political opponents.
It may be so, but a political corpse he will become, nevertheless.
