A new problem arises in the already troubled waters of the Danube Delta. The dam on the shoreline that connects Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe has been broken in order to take over some of the overflow.
It was rebuilt in the autumn. The shoreline will be broken again due to the danger of floods, and it is to be rebuilt in the winter. The dam is 16 km south from Sulina and has been built to the sea Delta from the sea erosion. Several electricity supply units for Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe are on the dam that has segments of causeway.
INTERESTS. Last year, the order to destroy the dam was signed by the Minister of Environment, Sulfina Barbu. It came contrary to the local protests that showed that the breach would have been more useful to a lessee in the area than to the state. They thought that some of the highbinders in Tulcea asked for the break in the dam in order to obtain economical benefits. The break would have caused the fish to swim freely from an area leased to Fisheries Romdelta Ltd. to another one. The scandal disappeared when the break in the shoreline was covered over, but it seems to reappear in the following weeks. A decision is to be taken in the coming weeks.
BALANCE. The floods that invaded Romania in the first three months of the year got to 34 counties, especially in Bihor, Mehedinti, Gorj, Dolj, Harghita, Covasna and Satu-Mare, according to the Minister of Administration and Internal Affairs, Vasile Blaga. The floods did not cause any victims, but destroyed 1,000 homes, thousands of house wares and tens of hectares of land, this meaning a total damage of 90 billion ROL.
FLOW. The Prut Watersâ Directorate (DAP), part of the "Romanian Waters" National Administration, forewarned about the fact that he Danube flow has reached 12,975 meters per second and got 9 centimeters over the flood quotation. "There has been incipient erosion in the external talus" at the defense dam Badalan, which is in the first defense phase. It was caused by the waves from the ships transiting in the area with no sylvan vegetation. The specialists are monitoring the dams on the Danube 24 hours a day and a protection has been developed to stop the erosion.
