The Iraqi Kidnapping - All Mere without Dressing

The statement of the Iraqi-American guide of the Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq, Mohammad Munaf, according to which the initial plan set up by Omar Hayssam was to kidnap the SDP (Social Democratic Party) Senator Vasile Ion raises a lot of questions and brings a lot of smiles.

Marie-Jeanne Ion, the daughter of the Senator, the one that was eventually kidnapped, and Sorin Miscoci, the Prima TV cameraman, her sufferance colleague in Iraq, see this as "mere without dressing". Moreover, the story about Omar Hayssam’s idea that came to him while he was watching the news regarding the Iraqi kidnapping of journalist Giuliana Sgrena doesn’t indicate the possible "target", Senator Vasile Ion. In fact, he said he didn’t intend to go to Iraq and no business agreements with Hayssam.

Jurnalul National: Did you know about the existence of this statement of Munaf in the "file of the kidnapping"?
Marie-Jeanne Ion: I found out about this statement from the media, like everybody else. I could say I was quite astonished…

What is your opinion now? How did Munaf get to say such a thing?
As far as I know, the information is real. Munaf has actually said such a thing. However, I think he laid on the colors too thickly. My father cannot be taken anywhere, just like that, at anybody’s wish. As far as I found out from him, he didn’t plan to go to Iraq and he wouldn’t have went on such a trip anyway. It seems a little childish to hear someone talking about a plan like this one. It looks like he wanted to put dust in the eyes of the people that want to find out the truth.

Tell me, did you take any legal action, as President Basescu suggested?
Yes, I did it after the last hearing at the Prosecutor’s Office. I didn’t take any decision about the sum yet, because I will present my demands to the Court.

Is this claim part of the file now?
What are you doing now? Did you get back to work?
Yes, after a dreamlike vacation - I went to Italy where I met Al Bano, who has been an extraordinary host. However, I have been at work every day from the morning until late in the evening since last Thursday. I have also worked during the weekend. There have been some changes here in the editorial office and it is pretty tedious.

Sorin Miscoci: "I wondered"

Sorin Miscoci was in the news cutting room, and he had no reaction to the latest information about the Iraqi nightmare. Beyond the "smiles", Sorin remains distant to the "Iraq" topic. It might seem normal if we take into account he was the last journalists invited to the Prosecutor’s Office to make his statements. Today, at ten o’clock in the morning, he will meet the investigators one more time.

Jurnalul National: What is your opinion towards Munaf’s statements, which are already a part of the file, according to some judicial sources?
Sorin Miscoci: I wondered when I heard Munaf’s latest stements. Actually, I wondered at the investigators’ statements, who managed to contact Munaf. I simply couldn’t believe my ears. Anyway, it’s their business. I am preoccupied with my life. I know that during the entire "detention" period in which I stood near Munaf, we had a good relationship. There, I couldn’t have possibly thought he would have been involved.

Did you know about them? Because, according to the same sources, they appeared at the end of last month.
No, I didn’t know. Well, the information received after I got back into the country went in the direction of a collaboration between Munaf and Hayssam, but I didn’t know anything.

Did you make any legal demands?
Not yet. I want to get to the end of the hearings and I will see after that. I will consult my lawyer and I will take a decision afterwards. And this will happen only after I found the true happenings in Iraq. This is the normal way. I have to take part in another hearing at the Prosecutor’s Office today.

Will you eventually make any claims?
I think there will be some time until a decision in this matter. I repeat, I want to be very sure about the things that happened there. I will take this decision only after that.

Do you believe in Munaf’s involvement in the plan that is said to have been set up by Omar Hayssam?
I don’t believe anything for now. These data will be very clear by the end of the investigation. I hope.

You got back to work…
Yes and this gives me a very nice feeling. The colleagues are even much more careful with me. Before, no one ever asked me if I wanted to go to a shooting. I feel good being active, going on the filed, meeting people, discussing.

How are the wedding preparations going?
Let’s say we are on schedule. There is less than a month. But we are almost ready. We are nervous and we try to do everything like we wanted to. We will have many guests and I hope everyone will be very pleased.
