The SDP Crossroads, the Iliescu-Nastase Crossroads

It is highly probable that a tandem leadership will be the conclusion on Wednesday. Their exact functions are to be set, being known the fact that Ion Iliescu does not want to be founder president, and that Adrian Nastase does not want to be executive president. The SDP (Social Democratic Party) is also doing its homework for this electoral year. Of course, the SDP members have to solve their internal problems first. After the elections, these problems transformed into internal fights, into life and death fights!

The great battle is apparently between Ion Iliescu and Adrian Nastase. This would be simple. Just that, each of the two is the representative of several ideas, trends, of certain political and business interests.

Tomorrow, at the Executive Bureau, the confrontation between the two or the result of the confrontation between the two will decide the destiny of the party for this year, an year which is very important for the Romanian politics, and for the SDP especially.

It is a certain fact that the two SDP leaders agreed that a separation of the SDP would destroy the party for good. Ion Iliescu and Adrian Nastase have yet to reach an agreement regarding the leader of the party.

It is highly probable that a tandem leadership will be the conclusion on Wednesday. Their exact functions are to be set, being known the fact that Ion Iliescu does not want to be founder president, and that Adrian Nastase doesn’t want to be executive president.

Another question, which the meeting on Wednesday must find an answer for, is the one regarding the supporters of the two. Will they be members of the party’s leadership? It has been decided that these members would have to have a flawless past, no matter whose supporters they are.

On Wednesday, we are also to find out the meaning of "flawless" for the SDP. Anyway, people like Mircea Geoana, Mihai Tanasescu, Eugen Bejinariu, Dan Nica, Titus Corlatean, Alin Teodorescu, as well as some other people from the new generation of the SDP politicians, shouldn’t be missing from the party’s leadership.

The results of this meeting will probably be the ones setting the hierarchy at the Social Democratic Party Congress, which is scheduled for April this year.

There is a possibility for this congress to be re-scheduled for March, because of this year’s political events.

In its turn, the Social Democratic Party is getting ready for the anticipated elections, but only after the present governing coalition gets worn-out!
