President Basescu and PM Tariceanu showed their antipathy for so many times that it was impossible for them to invent something new. However, last week, we were the witnesses of a new episode of this soap, which clearly shows that real life is better than movies any time the actual pros of scandal try to come up with something.
Basescu and Tariceanu thought it was appropriate for them to argue about the inauguration of a major investment, the Ford one in Craiova. With the Ford representatives and the American Ambassador in the same room. If we give it a little try, we will see that the two speeches of the two leaders give a few advices on the responsible way to in which the problem of the foreign investors has to be taken care of. Something like the fact that they look for stable markets, with a solid political environment that doesn’t have anything to do with scandals and unexpected events. This is what we should provide.
In practice, the President and the PM forget about this theory. The electoral year is more powerful than the fiscal, financial or budgetary one. It is obvious that this little spicy detail will not determine the Ford representatives to change their minds and walk away, but it places the Romanian politicians in a darker area.
Actually, there is nothing new about this. This time, the foreign observers were in the same place where the quarrel took place and this drew the attention. However, all the scandals between the palaces took place in front of the public. Representatives of businessmen all over the world could have found out about them from the papers, from TV or from the political anecdotes.
This game became a purpose for the President and the PM. They haven’t been living in Romania for some time, but in their world, apart from the real one in which the common Romanians live. They deserve each other. Basescu is the President of the ones that hate Tariceanu and Tariceanu is the Prime Minister of the ones that don’t want Basescu. This seems to be the goal of Romania. The separation of power is replaced by a scuffle.
I read what I wrote and I realized one thing, which is probably the most serious one. The fact that the President and the PM started a quarrel during a festive event at which investors attended and which was supposed to be trivial and boring. It was predictable! The press marked the event with a certain amount of apathy. In a normal country, such an event would have made the headlines for weeks in a row.
Since we talk about predictable things, the NATO Summit is near. I wonder if they plan anything special for Mr. Bush and Mrs. Merkel. The great artists feel the public and such a public cannot come to the same show twice during a mandate. However, I hope I am wrong and the two Romanian leaders will behave in accordance to this rare historical event.
