MARIUS TUCA - June 29 2004
I have to state from the onset that this title belongs to British journalists, who used it when publishing an in-depth report on the Danube Delta.
The Jurnalul National news-caravan traveled there too and delivered large articles, in todayâs issue included, to report on this fabulous land that is so little known to the world.
There are some signs that the Danube Delta is on the right track, but this by no means is to say that we should lay back with a sigh of relief that all its problems had been solved. Poaching, which was like a cancer eating up the Delta fauna, was considerably contained with effort from the leadership of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reservation.
One could safely state that fish are still swimming in the waters of the Delta now. But past studies had shown a high likelihood for the fish to become extinct within five to ten years.
This would have been a full-scale ecological disaster, as the fish extinction would have meant the one of the birds nesting and raising there young here every year.
The Danube Delta would thus have turned void of life.
Nowadays one can see the first proofs that hospitality industry is developing in the Delta too.
Investors who love this newest land of Europe had some outstanding performances here, providing hotel accommodation one cannot find a match with in other parts of the country, not even in the Black Sea resorts. It is sheer joy to be able to find two or three-star room accommodation, reasonably priced, while being surrounded by waters.
Unfortunately, such places are not many. I believe the state should have developed a special policy targeting the development of this unique place in Europe. But like many other unique places in our country, since 1989 the Danube Delta did not get any special funding or program from the state authorities.
I sometimes wonder if we are not under a curse or simply insanely unaware of what our natural beauties could deliver us ⦠I find no other way to a reasonable explanation as to why we keep disparaging our own country, Romania!
