EADS, [the European aerospace company] which was granted by the Executive the contract for securing Romaniaâs borders admitted that this type of contract was a first, BBC broadcasted. The value of the contract stays at over one billion euros.
Stefan Zoller, director with EADS, said a contract that big was a first for the company on the backdrop of increased terrorist threats in the world.
EADS specialized so far in defense industries and wants now to change profile. Zoller also said that once the [integrated security] system it delivers to Romania will be completed the company will be able to provide the same kind of product and service to other countries too, but "at much lower prices."
Yesterday, [Vasile] Puscas[, chief negotiator with the EU,] said that according to the contract, EADS is bound to invest in Romania. He said that the media attention [to the way the contract was signed with no prior bidding] prompted a public scandal which was fed by [EADSâ] competitors which were hurt by the decision taken by the Romanian Executive.
