Historical Poll

26 Noi 2004   •   00:00

By MARIUS TUCA - November 26th 2004
The historical transformations that Romania suffered through all these 15 years were unimaginable in December ’89. It is unbelievable, but true: Romania, one of the former members of the communist block, is a NATO member nowadays. The true meaning of this will probably be understood in the future more than it is now.

Also in 2004 we will finalize the negotiation chapters with the European Union and in 2007 we are to become full members. Even though we had to face a lot of hard times during all these 15 years, Romania finally turned for the right way and we are the only ones able to make it fabulous. I don’t think I am exaggerating at all.

To be convincing, I will ask you to focus on December ’89, during Ceausescu’s communist dictatorship, and you will understand me very well. This is for the ones that lived it and are able to remember what life lead by Ceausescu meant. The historical perspective I am talking about here might not have any meaning for the younger people, for the ones aged 15, 21 and even 30. Here is where the problem is. They are only able to see the recent bad things, and the path we followed from communism to capitalism doesn’t touch them at all. The only thing that counts for them is today and, especially, tomorrow.

All these generations, young generations, all these failures, recent failures, all these hopes, recent hopes, form Romania, the country that will go to vote on Sunday, the 28th of November. No matter our choice two days from now, I believe that we should think about Romania, the country that is a NATO member, that is going to be a European Union member, I mean we should think a bout Romania, the country who took her own destiny into her hands and this country is the only one able to make its destiny fabulous, as I previously said, a happy destiny or at least a promising one. So, Sunday’s voting is very important, and this is why we have to exercise this right!

It is an important poll because it will bring the power, the Government, the Parliament, the Presidency into the hands of the people that will have to bring a good end to the transformations and exams that a country, which is to become member of the classy European Union family, will have to pass. Our vote will be, this way, a vote for a historical mandate, possibly unprecedented during all these 15 after-the-revolution years. It is the mandate that might make the wishes come true, that might transform Romania in a country that will have to go head-to-head with all the EU members, even if it will be harder at the beginning.

I am in no position to tell you who to vote for, but I can tell you what you have to vote for and, especially, what kind of mandate you will vote for!
