Inconsistence- Tariceanu and Atanasiu Give Contradictory Statements

de Marina Constantinoiu    |    07 Iul 2006   •   00:00

When did they say the truth? A few months ago, when they praised the actions of the Romanian soldiers in Iraq and they emphasized the importance of our presence there, or now, when PM Tariceanu, as well as the Minister of Defense, Atanasiu, thinks it would be better for us to withdraw our troops in Iraq?

On the 27th of February 2006, when he took part in the balance meeting of the Ministry of National Defense, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu was saying a speech to praise the Army. "As long as the Army does its duty, here or anywhere else in the entire world, the Romanians can stay at rest". At that time, the PM was convinced that "this role is the more obvious the more terrorist attacks appear". In the same time, he said that "the Army is one of the most dependable sources for Romania in front of our Euro-Atlantic partners", and "the budget for 2006 has the highest value for the army in the entire after-the-Revolution period".

NEITHER HERE NOR THERE! A few days after these statements, the Minister of Defense said, during a press conference in Cluj, that "we will win economically besides the stability gained in an area with pronounced instability" (he was referring to Iraq - n.e.).He was talking about Romania’s wish of involving its industry in the endowment of the Iraqi Army, Police or Riot Police. He also stated in May, at the initiation of the "Monument of the American Heroes" in Bucharest, that "Romania proved and will still prove its attachment for the values of democracy, by contributing to the operations for maintaining the piece and order, and by its complex efforts to abide by its international engagements". So much consistence in such a short period of time!
