POLITICS - October 26th 2004

The NLP (National Liberal Party) and DP (Democratic Party) candidates for the Parliament plus some other few hundreds of members of the district organizations, most of them retired people, came yesterday in Bucharest in order that Calin Popescu Tariceanu would be introduced to them.

With this occasion, the liberal leader, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, wanted to show he is Stolojan’s successor and in good relations with Traian Basescu. "There are some people saying that Traian Basescu is the evil and I am the good part to improve the whole picture. There shouldn’t be anyone thinking that my politeness is a sign of weakness. I know how to fight back. I am firm and determined. There’s room for correct and determined people near Traian Basescu. We get along very well", emphasized Tariceanu.

ATTACKS. Both the politicians built their speeches on attacks towards the Government, Adrian Nastase and Mircea Geoana. "If I were the foreign investors and found such a fool, I would have signed such contracts myself", Basescu restarted his attack against Nastase, concerning the Betchtel and the Comarnic-Brasov branch contracts. In the same time, Tariceanu accused Mircea Geoana of jeopardising the oil reserves in the Black Sea, of leaving the Danube Delta to die, and Ukraine "to mock us at our frontier", all of them during his mandate.

Behind the messages said in order to encourage Alliances candidates for the Parliament, Traian Basescu scolded them a little. "I want to say that there is still time for you to back out. The Parliament must cease on being an institution that generates 10-12 known people, like Mona Musca and Emil Boc, but lazybones and criminals for the rest", ended the DP leader.

"A COPY". The Deputy Chamber SDP parliamentary group leader, Viorel Hrebenciuc, stated yesterday that Traian Basescu’s behaviour jeopardises Romania’s adherence to the EU and that, from this point of view, the DP leader is the copy of the GRP (Great Romania Party) leader, Corneliu Vadim Tudor. "We recommend Traian Basescu’s electorate to vote the original - Vadim - but not the copy - Basescu", said Hrebenciuc. Since the issue has been approached during the group meeting yesterday, he stated that the SDP deputies showed that international press articles concern them, because Traian Basescu is an "unpredictable man".
