POLITICS - August 19 2004
The SDP (the Social Democratic Party) president, Adrian Nastase, has forwarded yesterday a public letter to the liberal leader Theodor Stolojan (his main rival for the Presidency of Romania). The letter contains very harsh terms, and some of them will be shown to you in the following fragment.
"You want to become the President of this country. Very well, it is your constitutional right. What I donât understand is why this aspiration, surely noble and cold, for you as well as for the ones that lead towards it, has to be mudded with the littleness of your actions (.) In the text of the press conference a couple of days ago I read this statement that belongs to you, the NLP (the National Liberal Party) leader: "The Romanian people expect the political leaders to be models of behavior, honesty, and equilibrium and so on". Pardon me, but, without disagreeing with your reasoning, how is it that you know what the people of Romania want. I am going to quote a fragment representative for this political moment: "One day after the NLP (the National Liberal Party) - DP (the Democratic Party) Alliance wins the elections, we will go in the Victoria Plaza with 500 stakes with different inscriptions: Nastaseâs stake, Mischieâs stake and for who ever else". This wonderful sentence belongs to the political and governing strategy of your colleague Traian Basescu (a person that you have to know since Iâve seen you together at several conventional events and press conferences). Allow me to translate in Romanian for you the statement of the Allianceâs co-leader: After you take over the power you eliminate your adversaries! (.) As for the mudded campaign, do you know who said about you that you have prepared a financial engineering to take from the state many hundreds of millions of dollars in the favor of a group of local businessmen? Itâs your colleague, Radu Berceanu (.). PS: You have reproached I have "thrown the glove in the mud". Believe me when I say I didnât mean it, but it isnât my fault that this is the location you have chosen for receiving my answer."
REPLY. The liberals replied to Nastase using a public letter as well, signed "The janitor of the NLP headquarters". In this letter they believe that probably the letter of the SDP leader has been probably misssent , the real receiver being the "Romania Mare" magazine. The NLP letter, like the Nastaseâs one has a PS: "Mr. Prime Minister, do you have time to write such long letters?"
