Romanian Dickering

The Romanian authorities see the adherence to the European Union on the 1st of January 2007 as a great responsibility for the citizens as well as for the European citizens the future of which will be influenced by the their work at Strasbourg.

We are getting closer and closer to the moment of the adherence and, despite the recommendations of the European officials, the Romanian politicians didn’t hurry to agree on the procedures for the selection of the future Romanian members of the European Parliament, or to set up a calendar of the elections. We have to admit that they are still to settle on the terms of the new law to regulate the poll for the European Institution. This has to take place as soon as possible and the limit date is December 31st 2007.

LEGISLATIVE PROJECTS. Four such legislative initiatives have been filed in at the Parliament until now. Despite the fact that the parties that made them are different, the initiatives are based on the same principles. One project stands out. It belongs to social-democratic deputy Vasile Puscas. He would like the elections to take place in eight electoral divisions representing the developing regions. However, in order for the two Chambers of the Parliament to analyze the propositions, the new terms have to be discussed and put together by the Parliamentary Commission for the Electoral Code. The chief of the Commission, Mihai Alexandru Voicu (the National Liberal Party), says the new Code will probably contain a chapter regarding the elections for the European Parliament, which will not be the object of a separate law. His opinion is that the project will get to be discussed by the Parliament Members on the 1st of November. The elections will follow this calendar.
