Romania Might Run on SDP Lists
The ruling Social Democrat Party (SDP) may place members of the Diaspora on its list for parliamentary elections in the fall, said Romanian PM, Adrian Nastase, at the meeting Saturday with the members of the Romanian communities living abroad.
Nastase said his suggestion is based on the recent changes to the Constitution he promoted, which allow now for Romanians also holding the citizenship of another country to run for office in Romania.
"If that person would agree with our ideology and our point of views then we would place him or her on our electoral lists," Nastase said. "During the recent trip I made to the US, I talked with the representatives of the communities there on the possibility to allow as many Romanians living abroad the option to vote in the presidential and parliamentary election in November and even considered introducing an electronic voting system for the purpose," added Nastase.
"The estimates show some one million Romanians live in North America and we think the some 800,000 citizens with voting rights should take part in the elections," said Nastase.
He also said that the electronic voting system would answer similar needs of Romanians in Europe and that he would ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize as many voting sections as possible, even in communities Romania does not have embassies or consulates in.
