Romanian Peopleâs burden is the Romanian people. We represent this great burden, we the ones born, lived and developed before â89. For about half a century, history worked on this great burden whose repercussions we feel today as well.
With or without our will, the communist years eventually turned us into a heritage, from the moral, intellectual, physical and genetic point of view. We are a heritage that turned out very important in all theses 15 after-the-revolution years. We thought or we liked to think that we, the Romanian people, were born in December 1989. This is how it really is, but only as a figure of speech: we were born for one more time, we were born the second time, if you want, but we remained the same. The same with other ideals, hopes, with other ambitions and energies, but the same. The Romanian people havenât change over the night, couldnât move Heaven and Earth in December in order to be different. Unfortunately! To have an example in hand, think that the hundreds of thousands of informers, or even the millions during Ceausescuâs lead, continued on living in Romania after December â89 as well, even if they didnât inform anymore. And the examples could go on for ever.
So, the heritage that we have been, that we are, has become a more or less great burden depending on our capacity of changing. Moreover, Romanian peopleâs fiber, very affected for half a century, had to deal not only with a new world but also with a world at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, a world that was incredibly transforming. Rebuilding a new Romania with the same people has been a task much too hard for us. And it couldnât be different. Unfortunately, instead of treating the diseases caused by the past sufferance, in order to end for good the scars, instead of treating the essence diseases, we put all our energy, skills and force in the temporary colds. This is like treating a highly infected body with aspirin. Though, taking into account the great heritage, all this burden that we were and still are, I think we did an honorable job. We, the scar people!
