SDP, the Ghost-Party

SDP, the Ghost-Party

Mr. Mircea Geoana seems to be too small for such a large and heavy SDP (the Social Democratic Party). This is why an important cutback would be welcome. The people that still believe in Adrian Nastase or regret the times in which he was the leader of the party would disappear. He would send away all the unpleased and contesting members. He could put his men in the leading positions of the party. An 8% SDP would be much more appropriate for the leading virtues of Mr. Geoana. The party would be like a two-door closet, just perfect for the trustworthy people and the ones that are willing to shut up in exchange for a Parliament mandate.

SDP lost 15% in the polls, approximately 450 mayors and several Senators and Deputies since Mr. Geoana took over. He is an average politician for the people, when it comes to the trust. Traian Basescu, Mona Musca, Mugur Isarescu, Theodor Stolojan and Gigi Becali are better positioned! All the recent researches show that SDP is not seen as the Opposition or as the alternative. Two years have passed and he is yet to pick a political direction and to show a project for Romania. The leaders of the party are more than involved in the fight for power and they do not have the time or resources for politics.

Mr. Geoana didn’t manage to turn SDP in a party in which the members would want the same things or speak the same language. The so called team doesn’t exist at all. SDP is more fractured now than it was when Mr. Nastase was leading. The Mitrea group, the Hrebenciuc group, the Vanghelie group, the group in Cluj etc. The fracture intensified the fight for the leading and Parliament positions and made more room for concessions. If Mr. Valer Dorneanu is not the vice-president of the Deputies’ Chamber anymore, Miron Mitrea cannot use his plan. The fact that Mr. Dancu was named the vice-leader of the Parliament group in the Senate softened the loss a little bit. The antechamber of the SDP Secretary General is this way close to Mr. Dancu. Mr. Ponta, the new vice-president of the Deputies’ Chamber, is now closer to becoming the SDP leader. Several members have to leave the party and the dream could come true. As far as the group in Cluj is concerned, the last researches show that SDP is losing the Transylvania electorate step by step.

During the National Permanent Bureau sessions, where the laboratory of the social-democratic politics should work, the leaders hunt and cancel each other. Because there is no trust, there is only suspicion. If Mr. Geoana proposes anything, Mr. Mitrea is against it, and the other way around. There is growling, subtle threats, but no one says the big words about the continuous fall in the polls, about the things that should be done in order for the party to become a real alternative to the present Government.

A party member of the Socialist International is using the methods of the communist party in the 40s and 50s. Threats, telling on and office-destructions. These are the methods used to remove the unwanted members. The lack of reaction from the SDP leading board as far as these ruffian acts are concerned makes me think. I wonder if there is any difference between Mr. Geoana and Mr. Vanghelie.

The SDP reform meant just a fight for power. This is not enough for a clear image. One also needs brains and grit. The grit seems to have disappeared after the Congress. This party doesn’t need a reform, but a reconstruction.
