Southern Bucharest To Get Airport and Channel To The Danube River

de Daniela Ivan    |    18 Feb 2008   •   00:00
Romanian authorities want to boost the development of the capital's southern area, and to this end planned to build an airport to service it and to finish the construction work to a channel which is to link the Danube River with Bucharest, placed some 60 kilometers up north.

Transportation minister Ludovic Orban said that the fesability study for the location of the airport is underway, and that is to be covered by his ministry's budget in 2009.

As for the Bucharest-Danube channel – a construction work which started during the communist era but was abandoned in the mean time – Orban said the Ministry of the Environment took over the project, developing it as an irrigation channel, but it was up to his ministry to re-think the project as a transportation channel too.

The central government's initiatives mirror the concern of the local politicians, which state that the unbalance in the development of the Bucharest's north and south regions should be done away with.

Razvan Murgeanu, deputy Bucharest mayor, stated at the International Fair for Apartment Buildings Condominium that “the southern part of the city should get a helping hand towards its development, now that the city is expanding more to the north.”
