Sulfina Barbu (photo) is embarrassing Romania at the highest level once again. This time, it happened at the Environment Council of the EU. Yesterday, the Environment Ministers in the EU countries have blocked the proposition of the European Commission that would have forced Hungary to cultivate the genetically modified corn MON810 of the American company Monsanto.
This type of corn produces a toxin that bears away the pests and can have negative effects on the fauna and flora, according to certain scientific studies published in Austria and Hungary.
"ALWAYS AGAINST". For the first time a full member of the Environment Council, Romania was the only country to abstain from this vote. This way, Sulfina Barbu betrayed Hungary and the anti-OMG alliance in the Central and Eastern Europe. Poland, Austria, Hungary and Greece have all forbidden the import and cultivation of MON810.
PROTESTS. The ecologists quickly expressed their disagreement with Sulfinaâs attitude. "We gave Lady Minister Sulfina Barbu all the legal, scientific and even economical arguments to support Hungary and forbid the use of this type of corn in Romania as well. We are indignant at the shocking attitude of the Minister and we were wondering about the interests behind her strange decision favoring the American company that produces the OMG", Gabriela Paun, the campaign coordinator of Greenpeace Romania, stated.
