The Statute Divides the Coalition

05 Iul 2006   •   00:00

Upset because the discussions regarding the Statute of the minorities were blocked yesterday morning due to the absence of the deputies, the DUHR (Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania) president, Marko Bela, criticized his coalition colleagues and accused them of not supporting him. "We have been discussing about the theme of this project for almost one year. There were times during this period when our colleagues made us believe the law would be validated. Afterwards, some of them did not agree with it anymore, we started to talk about the principles and despite the fact that this is a project the EU requested, we did not manage to validate it", Marko said, according to Mediafax. The opinion of the DUHR president is that this thing "proves a certain level of hypocrisy".

THE STATUTE

However, the discussions regarding the statute have started again in the afternoon. The deputies of the three commissions managed to validate, after an hour and a half, an amendment, which eliminates the need for the agreement of the National Council of the Cultural Autonomy for the naming of the leading boards of the institutions and education units with teaching in the maternal language. Therefore, the naming of the directors is the result of contests, and the contest commissions should have members representating the respective national minority.
