Since July 2004 is the month Romania holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, Nastase took to opportunity to bring to the fore some of the issues Romanian diplomacy is concerned with.

The debate on the cooperation process between the UN and the regional organizations on stabilization processes was the pinnacle of activity for the Romanian Presidency at the UN Security Council.

The debate was open by Nastase in the presence of the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Also present were representatives of the European Union, OSCE, and the Arab League, the African Union, as well as outstanding personalities in the realm of international diplomacy. Nastase also had a bilateral meeting with Annan.

In the evening, a photo exhibition titled "Romania - a bird-eye’s view" opened at the UN Headquarters, which also hosted the concert of the children’s chorus "Allegretto."

The security measures are tighter in New York, judging from the larger number of police patrolling the streets on Monday than the day before. Access in the UN Headquarters is also restricted, with limited access for the media and thorough checks of the photo equipment.

On Wednesday the PM’s schedule is very busy in Washington, with visits to the Department of State, Pentagon, Capitol Hill, the White House and the International Monetary Fund. Nastase and President Bush will hold a press-conference in the Oval Office that will be broadcast by CNN and other two networks at 14:55 local time (21:55 Bucharest time).

The Wednesday schedule will end with the reception on the inauguration of the Washington Bureau of the Romanian Public Radio. Its director, Dragos Seuleanu, Doina Saiciuc and Horia Puscasu will host the event. Then the official delegation will head for home, via Island.

We will reserve our comments on the visit for then.
