Vanghelie and I Supported Iliescu for the 2005 Congress

Vanghelie and I Supported Iliescu for the 2005 Congress

It could seem bizarre, but, recently, I have become one of the main concerns of Mr. Marean Vanghelie, even if I am not the 5th District. I am not going to put his opinions to the issue since they are all based on the freedom of speech, which I respect. However, I cannot stand aside when Mr. Vanghelie starts rewriting history. Or, should I say, retelling it.
The other day, during a TV show, the Mayor from the 5th District said "Nastase destroyed" Iliescu at the Congress and Geoana stood him up, because Geoana is not a marionette. However, that Congress didn’t take place such a long time ago for us to forget absolutely everything and allow Marean Vanghelie say anything he wants.
People have repeatedly reproached me with not running against Ion Iliescu in 2005, with having been afraid of something or of being part of some sort of agreement. I always thought it was strange for the people to suspect the person that did things in accordance to the party’s public decisions.

During the previous Congress, the one in 2004, we all attended the moment when Ion Iliescu, the Romanian President at that time, was invited to re-become the party president at the end of his mandate. Of course, this needed the vote of another Congress, but I agreed with this invitation, as well as Marean Vanghelie, Mircea Geoana and many others. How could I run against the "candidacy" we had all accepted?
SDP was misdirected after the elections in 2004 and one of the reasons for which Iliescu lost, was the fact he didn’t agree with the candidacy of Miron Mitrea for the General Secretary of the party.
If we take a look on the present statements, we could think everyone, except Nastase, voted for Iliescu in 2005. Why are certain leaders afraid of saying they had voted for Geoana? It doesn’t take so much courage after all, because Geoana is the present leader. Why is Marean Vanghelie afraid of admitting he had stated the former Minister of External Affairs was an "implemented monkey" when Geoana announced his candidacy? Actually, during that press conference organized at SDP Bucharest, I was the only one that defended Mircea Geoana, because I thought Vanghelie was using an inappropriate language.

Some time ago, during another TV show, Marean Vanghelie was reproaching me with patronizing him. He was right. I have corrected this error lately. I take him seriously, which is why I have to say the following:
Vanghelie is not representative for SDP Bucharest or for Bucharest. He is not a real politician and he cannot be a leader. He could be a good Mayor for the 5th District. However, before starting to write or tell the history, he should read a lot. He shouldn’t brag about not having studied too much in school and there are no real excuses for this. He wasn’t taken away from school and no one stopped him from learning the basic rules of the Romanian language or of the social behavior.
On the other hand, I think I have to say one thing. I am too old a politician to believe that attacks coming from Marean Vanghelie actually come from him. Actually, I don’t debate with the Mayor of the 5th District. I am really concerned for the ones that use him, for the ones that talk about putting on clean linen, modernization, reformation and choose such a spokesperson for that.
