TOURISM - July 30 2004

If you are not yet off to your vacation destination and still looking for one, maybe a five-day tour in the Maramures-Bucovina-Neamt regions of Romania could be a nice option to consider, particularly since the accommodation is in rural cottages.
IOHANNA ONACA

The trip starts in Baia Mare city, with the first stop at Surdesti, where one of the tallest wooden churches in Europe is to be found.
Then the tourists would head off for Sapanta to see the world-famous "happy cemetery" [where humorous stances penciled in lively colors on wooden crosses depict the life the deceased conducted] as well as the Peri Monastery there.
The first night would be spent at Ieud, and the next day the oldest church in Maramures would be visited. Other monasteries scheduled on the tour are those of Moldovita, Putna, Sucevita, and Voronet, as well as those of Agapia, Neamt and Varatec, in the Neamt County. [These five centuries old monasteries are world-famous for the murals on their outside walls.] The price for the trip is 170 euros per person, which covers accommodation, three meals per day and transportation.

Or, if a trip by an 18th century coach is more appealing to you, then you may consider the coach-tour of Ciungani-Basarabasa-Ociu-Ocisor monasteries dating back in the 15th to the 18th century. The cost of the trip by coach is set at 4 euros per hour, and the accommodation and the two meals per day are provided in a boarding house in Vata de Jos, County Hunedoara, for 14 euros per person per day.
