The US contractor Bechtel, which is in charge with building the Transylvania highway in Romania, wants 250 million Euro more to finish the work on the section between Cimpia Turzii and Gilau. Only 18-kilometer of the 42-kilometer long section were covered in tarmac, so far.
Bechtel spokesperson Bogdan Sgarcitu said land owners still have to sell their ownership rights for stripes of land between kilometer 0 and kilometer 10, and 21 utilities have to be moved out of the highway track. Bechtel will move only seven of those. In 2007 Bechtel said the Cimpia Turzii - Gilau section will be completed by 2008.
The 250 million Euro the company asks for comes on top of the 670 million Euro paid so far, which brings the highway cost at 21.9 million Euro per kilometer!!!!
PM Emil Boc said the state budget put aside 119 million Euro to finance the Transylvania highway this year, and that other amounts are available in the budget to that end.
