Justification for Ruffianism

de Ion Cristoiu    |    12 Ian 2007   •   00:00

Based on the new returns of asset, several newspapers proved to be more courageous and told off one of the most daring deals of the present Power: putting the political clientele into certain Administration Borders and Privatization Commissions.

When they were attacking SDP (the Social Democratic Party), NLP (the National Liberal Party) and DP (the Democratic Party) were making a big deal out of passing public money into the pockets of people leading the country. Seduced by the virginity of the political morality, the electorate got other the hunch that the Alliance would govern the country in the same bad way in which the former Democrat Convention used to do it, and voted for it, based on the fact that duds are better than corrupt politicians. Thanks to the articles in the press, this electorate found out that, in 2006, dignitaries like Bogdan Olteanu, Sebastian Vladescu, Daniel Chitoiu, Stefan Diaconu, Gheorghe Barbu, Aleodor Francu earned good money by taking part in the Administration Boards or in the Privatization Committees. Who gave them the money that should have gone to the ones that had voted for them? Who gave them this opportunity? The Romanian Government, the one proudly led by Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

The trick with getting public money simply by taking part in Councils and Commissions strongly related to the parties having the power marks two historical moments:
a) getting back to a method of the inter-war politicians, which wasn’t agreed at all by the press at that time;
b) the replacement of the SDP method with illegal money from commissions.

On Monday, the 8th of January 2007, on Realitatea TV, PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu had to answer a few questions regarding this immoral enrichment method of the dignitaries. What were his answers? Did he disapprove this felony and promise measures against the ones that had been part of it? Not at all.

Calin Popescu Tariceanu agreed with this method and he even justified it. He said the dignitaries, people paid from the national budget, are much worse paid than the employees of the private companies. He added that the dignitaries should be paid extra in order for them to deliver good results. There’s no doubt that Calin Popescu Tariceanu has to deal with great issues in the party and in the Government. The uncanny concentration needed to be a leader of NLP and of the Government seriously affected his lucidity. However, we didn’t expect for it to influence his sanity. Because it is infamous to say that these dignitaries, with low salaries, have to take part in administration boards to get rich. One gets to be a dignitary in a democratic country at one’s own will.

Beyond the well-known reality saying the dignitary works for the people and has a low-paid salary, Calin Popescu Tariceanu doesn’t take into consideration another elementary truth. Even though they earn less than the employees of the private companies, the dignitaries have another kind of advantages that even the richest people dream about. They have power, notoriety, and leadership positions. The lack of lucidity from the PM gets critical when he says he was forced to put them in these committees, because, otherwise, they would have been tempted by corruption activities.

The fact that these important sums are earned by the simple presence of the dignitaries doesn’t mean they haven’t done any corruption activities. Let’s stop here and take a good look at a unique justification in the predatory history of the Romanian transition. Our illustrious Prime Minister preferred the legal bribe to the illegal bribe for which the dignitaries risked getting caught by the authorities (when the Tariceanu Government would be long forgotten)!
