President Ion Iliescu is waiting for a written document from SDP (the Social Democratic Party) to prove the official invitation for his comeback in the governing partyâs leading board and for being one of the partyâs candidates for a senator mandate.

Though on last Friday the extraordinary Congress decided unanimously inviting him to come back in the leading board of SDP and to candidate on this political formationâs lists for a senator mandate, President Ion Iliescu wants a written document regarding this issue from the SDP leading board. "I am waiting for an official document", stated yesterday the chief of the state when on the "Henri Coanda" Airport, due to the press wanting him to comment upon the invitation belonging to the party in Power. Asked whether he will resign in order to be a candidate for the Senate, Iliescu stated that there is no constitutional law to require his resignation in order for him to be able to take part in the parliamentary elections, emphasizing that this also happened in 1992 and 1996.
According to some inside SDP sources, yesterday, the executive president of the party, Octav Cozmanca, sent the chief of the state a letter containing the official invitation for him to come back in the SDP leadership and for his candidacy on the partyâs parliamentary lists.
CONGRESS. At the end of last week, Ion Iliescuâs invitation approved during the extraordinary Congress was made by the SDP president, Adrian Nastase, himself. "It would be a natural but important issue for the continuity of the social vision and for emphasizing the SDP approach to the people. We are a party of the majority, and this is because of Ion Iliescu. . There has never been a Romanian leader so close to the people. And this is not just about his freewill. Ion Iliescu feels good among the people and people feel at ease when they are close to the President. (.) Due to the tough path that we will have to follow in the future we need him to come back in the party and lead it. We need him in the Parliament. This is the motive that led to this invitation and, at the same time we are being sure it will be accepted", said Nastase.
