The President Gets Letters From the Ruling Party

The leadership of the [ruling] Social Democrat Party (SDP) formally asked the Romanian President Ion Iliescu to take over again the helm of the party, once his current mandate ends, and to run for Senate on the SDP lists in this fall elections.

Yesterday, Adrian Nastase, PM and SDP incumbent leader, sent Iliescu two letters to that effect. Compliments and high praise abounded in both letters.

One of them read:
"Esteemed President, the [SDP] Congress unanimously approved this proposal, as it deemed that You, as founder of this party, are entitled to take over the party leadership after your presidential mandate ends. (…) Your experience and the values that steered you through life and professional activity guarantee that with Your coming back at the helm of the SDP, the party will consistently pursue its social-democrat path. The SDP is the party of the many and this is largely because of You, President Ion Iliescu," wrote Nastase in one of the letters.

The invitation sent to the head of the state for him to run for the Senate on the SDP lists is as full of praise:
"We noted with great satisfaction that the party’s delegates to the Congress unanimously voted to place your name on the SDP [electoral] lists. The new SDP representatives to be in the parliament must have the best mentor there is to steer them towards responsible politics, conducted solely for the benefit of the citizen, as in the last 14 years [you did]. You, Mr. President, brought to the fore the idea that political activity and economic growth make no sense if they do not aim to bring about a better life for the people. The SDP Extraordinary Congress deemed yours to be the best model to follow by our future parliamentarians and locally elected officials," Nastase wrote. He concludes saying that he is certain that "the wise and experienced politician that Ion Iliescu is will answer favorably to these invitation, thus fulfilling the whishes of the Romanian voters."
