Litigation Over Ceausescu’s Bed

OBSERVER July 26 2004

Dinel Staicu, owner of Universitatea Craiova soccer team playing the A division, called the Dolj County Council to court over ownership of a bed former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu slept in only once.
CRISTIAN VASILCOIU

Staicu is a well-know promoter of Ceausescu’s image: he notoriously funded and dedicated to Ceausescu’s memory an amusement park and a museum on the outskirts of Craiova city. Now Staicu seems set to fight teeth and claws for owning this bed which was part of the furniture in the Peony Villa, which was the official residence of the former dictator when he paid visits to Craiova.
After 1989, the villa went under the ownership of the Dolj County Council. Then the heirs of the former owner of the villa, boyar Barbu Druga, claimed their property back. This time, a company controlled by Staicu bought the villa from the heirs, or rather all their legal rights to it.
Now it was for the County Council to grant the property back not to the original heirs but to Staicu. And so it did, but not with the furniture in the villa. That was a later addition, and not part of the original property nationalized from Druga.
But the former policeman Staicu thinks otherwise, and is not likely to give up so easily.
