The leader of the Democrat Union of Hungarians in Romania sUDMRţ Bela Marko said that the Hungarian language should get the status of “official regional language.” Marko made the statement yesterday in Tirgu-Mures.
A future governing program of UDMR should state that Romanian and Hungarian have “an equal status” in some of the regions in Romania., which virtually means that Hungarian should become an “official regional language.”
“Bilingual status would mean that some local authorities should use both languages as having an equal status and being equally valid,” added Marko. To a question whether he envisages achieving the status of official language for Hungarian, Marko answered “yes, as a regional tongue, not as a language valid for the whole country.”
Romanian Constitution says at Article 13 that Romanian is the official tongue of the nation.
