Endless source of guts!

President Traian Băsescu asked the Parliament not to influence politically the fight against corruption! After transforming the battle with corruption into its electoral forte, after politically influencing the Prosecutors’ Office by supporting the naming of the prosecutors made by the Executive, but not by the representatives of the magistrates, after he actuated the TV-justice and annihilated the innocence, after transforming the legal investigation and the conviction of his political adversaries in the measure unit of the success of his campaign against corruption, the President accuses the Legislative of being politically influenced. The Parliament is an institution made up of politicians called to give shape and force to law programs and political decisions as well as to supervise the political action of the state administration.

Giving color and political orientation to the Prosecutors’ Office – since the Romanian judicial system does not have a body of prosecutors to conduct prosecutions free from any dependency from the executive power -, but to ask the Parliament to have no political influence, would be a sign of a serious political lack of culture or even the expression of borderless guts.

The Parliament is not a court of justice. It is a political institution. The Constitution of Romania, adopted by referendum, offered it the possibility to ensure the immunity of its members as a form of protection of the wishes and interests of citizens who have chosen them. Among the voters who voted for Mr. Basescu there are certainly some who, without the need to have evidence, are convinced that, for example, his former and, potentially, his future counter-candidate, Adrian Nastase, is guilty of punishable criminal acts. Among those who have preferred Mr. Nastase during the elections, some have doubts about his guiltiness. The Parliamentarians who have received, in their turn, the votes of the latter, will not agree to waive the immunity unless the defendant's evidence to support the accusation are so clear that nobody can pass them over without a compromise. This might lead to the escape of certain guilty people. Either way, it would be a political action. This time, it would be an action without democratic legitimacy. Can anyone blame, therefore, an essentially political institution of acting in accordance to its constitutional duties? The one that exercises a right cannot be accused of abuse! If this is inconvenient, we should change the Constitution, but not insult the Parliament!

The head of state invites us to read also the report the European Commission experts to see how they point fingers to our laws. Of course, it is the Job of the European Parliament to demand explanations from the Commission in connection with the superior credit that it gives to the prosecutors named by the Executive against parliamentarians elected by the citizens. In the democratic order, this is a strange thing that cannot be unpunished. However, Mr. Basescu does not say a word about the anti-Parliament intense lobby carried out by the Presidential institution, DNA, the Prosecutors’ Office and, in general, by all the internal and external opinion setters mobilized in supporting the authoritarian project that would allow Romania's transition from the plural corruption to the centralized corruption. Who did the European experts discuss with? Where did they collect their information from? On what do they base their opinions? The Parliament is not organized for lobby or to counter the negative propaganda.

Finally, Mr. President has one more request to make to us: to accept as a goal the action of getting Romania out of the supervision of the EU and, therefore, we should agree with the removal of all the political influences in the Parliament. It is quite clear that this means the destruction of the Parliament. It is an old wish of Mr. Basescu. It is a miracle that the Parliament managed to get through this entire scheme of Traian Basescu all this time. However, proposing to take the secondary EU member statute from Romania after doing everything you could to maintain that statute shows breathtaking guts.

The only thing left to do for the President is to hold a referendum on the reintroduction of the death penalty to punish those who have provided (false) information to the EU, which led to Romania remaining a monitored country!
